Bringing Moby Dick to Life for Kids (Yes, Really)

Let’s be honest for a second.

Moby-Dick is not exactly known for being a quick, easy read… especially for kids.

It’s long. It’s dense. And somewhere between whale anatomy and philosophical tangents, most adults start quietly wondering what they signed up for.

So naturally, I thought:

“Let’s turn this into something a 5-year-old can actually enjoy.”

The goal wasn’t to just “simplify” Melville’s classic tale into something forgettable.

It was to:

  • Keep the sense of adventure accessible for even the youngest sea dogs

  • Keep the vibrant character-driven drama

  • Keep my adaptation as faithful to Melville’s original epic story as possible

But make it:

  • Short (over half of my original manuscript ended up on the cutting room floor due to funding)

  • Visually stimulating with a unique retro art style

  • Actually fun for kids ages 5–8 with engaging and educational bonus activities

That meant cutting through the fluff, tightening up the pacing, and focusing on what matters most:

Story. Action. Imagination.

Of course, no children’s adaptation feels complete without strong visuals.

To bring Moby Dick to life on the page, I collaborated with CatCow Studio, (a local animation studio in Portland), on the illustrations for the print and e-book editions. The goal was to create memorable, hand-crafted artwork that would support the story and help guide young readers through the adventure.

That meant finding the right balance:

  • Expressive, engaging characters

  • Clear, readable compositions

  • A style that felt playful without losing the scale and intensity of the ocean journey

CatCow Studio delivered that in spades.

Each illustration was designed to:

  • Reinforce key moments in the story

  • Help younger readers follow along visually

  • Add personality and emotion without overwhelming the page

The result is a version of Moby Dick that doesn’t just read well, it feels alive, whether a child is flipping through the book on their own or following along while listening to the immersive new cinematic audiobook.

A story that has stood the test of time, now shaped for a new generation of readers.

Accessible, engaging, and ready to spark curiosity from the very first page.
